Carbon vs Fiberglass Pickleball Paddles

What the face actually does

The face is the surface that contacts the ball for the few milliseconds it is on the paddle. Two things about it matter: how stiff it is, and how much its texture grips the ball. Stiffness affects power and feel; texture affects spin. Carbon and fiberglass sit at opposite ends of both.

Fiberglass: softer, poppier, more forgiving

A fiberglass face flexes a little more on contact. That flex does two useful things: it gives the ball an extra bit of pop (so you get power with less effort), and it widens the effective sweet spot (so off-center hits are more forgiving). The trade-off is spin — a smooth fiberglass face grips the ball less, so it generates less topspin and slice. That is exactly the right trade for a beginner, which is why our beginner picks lean fiberglass.

Carbon: stiffer, grippier, more spin

A carbon (especially raw or “T700”) face is stiffer and has a gritty, textured surface that bites the ball. That bite is the source of the heavy topspin and slice advanced players rely on for third-shot drops, drives and rolls. The cost is forgiveness: a stiff face has a smaller effective sweet spot, so it rewards clean contact and punishes mishits. Once your contact is consistent — around the intermediate level — carbon starts to clearly win, which is why the intermediate picks lean carbon.
