Between about $30 and $60. Below that you are usually looking at heavy wood; above it you are paying for spin and stiffness a beginner cannot yet use. A good beginner paddle lasts a long time.

Most players do best with a midweight paddle, roughly 7.8 to 8.4 ounces — it balances power, hand speed and arm comfort. If you are unsure, midweight is the safe default.

Neither universally. A thicker 16mm core is softer and more control-oriented; a thinner 14mm core is poppier and more powerful. Most improving players prefer 16mm because control at the kitchen line raises your level.

You can, but you should not. Running shoes lack lateral support and roll outward on sideways movement — a real ankle-injury risk. Use court shoes instead; it is the cheapest, highest-impact upgrade you can make.

Serve underhand and diagonally; the ball must bounce once on each side before anyone volleys (the two-bounce rule); you cannot volley in the kitchen; and only the serving team scores, to 11. Full guide: pickleball rules.

The non-volley zone — the 7-foot area on each side of the net. You cannot hit the ball out of the air (volley) while standing in it or on its line, though you may enter it to play a ball that has bounced.
