Almost every modern paddle uses a polymer honeycomb core, and its thickness — usually 14mm or 16mm — is the single spec that most decides how the paddle plays. Thinner is poppier and more powerful; thicker is softer and more controllable. Get this one right and the rest of the spec sheet falls into place.

Why core thickness matters so much

A honeycomb core behaves like a trampoline. A thinner 14mm core flexes less and springs the ball back faster, so you get more free pace and a livelier “pop” off the face. A thicker 16mm core has more cushion; it absorbs the ball for a fraction longer, which takes pace off and gives you touch and a bigger, softer sweet spot. Neither is better in the abstract — they are two ends of a power-versus-control dial, and where you want to sit depends entirely on how you win points.

The case for 14mm (power and pop)

A 14mm core is the choice for players who win with pace — drives, put-aways, quick counter-attacks. The extra pop means you do not have to swing as hard for the same ball speed, and the firmer feel suits a fast, aggressive net game. The costs are touch and forgiveness: a thin core is harder to reset softly with, less absorbent on a hard incoming ball, and can feel harsher on the arm. The case for 16mm (control and touch)

A 16mm core is the control-oriented default, and for good reason: most pickleball points above the beginner level are won at the kitchen line, in a patient exchange of dinks and resets. A thick, soft core absorbs pace so you can drop the ball gently into the kitchen instead of popping it up. It also cushions contact, which is easier on the elbow — part of why we recommend it for senior players. The trade is put-away power: you generate pace yourself rather than getting it free. Which should you choose?

If you are unsure, start with 16mm. It is the more forgiving, more controllable spec, it suits the soft game that raises your rating fastest, and it is kinder to your arm. Move to 14mm only when you know you win with power and want more free pace. What about 13mm and 17mm cores?

Fourteen and sixteen millimeters are the two you will meet most, but the range runs wider. A 13mm core is even poppier and hotter than 14mm — a specialist power spec for aggressive players who supply their own control. A 17mm core, like the Wilson Vesper's, is even softer and more absorbent than 16mm — a specialist control spec for the reset-and-dink game. Think of them as the extremes on either side of the common 14–16mm band: most players are best served somewhere in the middle, and only move to an extreme once they know exactly how they win points.

Core thickness and your arm

Thickness is not only about power and control; it is also about comfort. A thinner, firmer core transmits more shock up the handle on every hit, especially on off-center contact, which can aggravate an elbow. A thicker, softer core cushions the ball and is easier on the joints. How thickness pairs with the other specs

Core thickness rarely acts alone; it combines most directly with shape and face. A thick 16mm core in a forgiving wide-body, with a textured carbon face, is the classic modern control paddle — soft, spinny and easy to play. A thin 14mm core in an elongated shape is the classic power build — hot and long, rewarding clean contact and punishing mishits. Weight matters too: a thin, poppy core in a heavy paddle is a lot to control, while a light 16mm paddle is about as forgiving as pickleball gear gets.

A simple rule keeps you out of trouble: match the aggression of the core to your own consistency. The more reliably you find the center of the face, the more you can enjoy a thinner, hotter core; the more your contact still wanders, the more a thick, soft core flatters your game.
